Mont Blanc tunnel
Aosta Valley, Milan, the lakes and the north-west
The direct line from the Channel ports through France into the Aosta Valley, then onward to Lombardy and down to Emilia and Tuscany.
From any UK address to anywhere in Italy, Sicily and Sardinia included. We prepare the customs claim, choose the Alpine crossing that suits your region, and plan the awkward last stretch: ZTL permits, condominio rules, external furniture lifts and gravel lanes.
How every move is set up
There is no single best way into Italy. The crossing that makes sense depends on where you are going, the season and whether a tunnel is closed. Your quote names the route and why we chose it. Our guide to the Brenner and Mont Blanc routes compares them in more depth.
Aosta Valley, Milan, the lakes and the north-west
The direct line from the Channel ports through France into the Aosta Valley, then onward to Lombardy and down to Emilia and Tuscany.
Turin, Piedmont and western Liguria
Emerges in the Susa Valley above Turin. A natural choice for Piedmont, and the usual alternative when Mont Blanc is closed for maintenance.
Verona, Venice, Trentino and the north-east
Comes down through Alto Adige and Trentino towards Verona, well placed for the Veneto, Friuli and the Adriatic side of Emilia-Romagna.
Genoa, the Ligurian coast and coastal Tuscany
Enters Italy at Ventimiglia without a high pass, useful for Liguria and as a fallback when mountain weather turns.
The last stretch
The motorway part of a move to Italy is predictable. The final street is where moves go wrong, so that is where we spend the planning time: photos and map pins at survey, permits requested from the comune, and the right vehicle sent for the lane you actually live on.
Florence, Rome, Bologna and many smaller towns restrict traffic in the centro storico. We request the temporary vehicle permit and the street-occupation permit from the comune, or prepare the forms where only residents may apply.
Small lifts, narrow stairs and house rules on moving hours are normal in Italian apartment blocks. Our coordinator contacts the amministratore, and a montamobili external lift is booked when furniture will not fit the stairwell.
Hill farms down gravel lanes get a shuttle van for the last stretch. Sicily and Sardinia add a ferry leg, with local vans for old-town streets that a lorry cannot enter.
Each regional page covers what is particular about delivering there: Venetian goods boats, Roman ZTL permits, Tuscan gravel roads, Neapolitan hill streets, Puglian trulli and the ferry crossing to Sicily. Choose your region for the detail.
Our route pages cover removals from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol and Liverpool to Italy, with notes on local access at the British end. We collect from the towns and villages around each city too, and from everywhere else in England, Scotland and Wales.
A complete household moved from a UK address to an Italian one: survey, packing, the export and Italian customs entries, the Alpine crossing, and access planning for ZTL streets, condominio staircases or a gravel lane at the far end.

Our house sits at the end of a white road that the sat-nav refuses to believe in. The surveyor asked for a map pin and a photo of every bend, and on the day a small van met the lorry where the tarmac ends and ferried everything up. Not a mark on the dresser we were most nervous about.
Top-floor flat inside the ZTL, lift the size of a phone box. They sorted the access permit with the comune, booked an external lift for the sofa and the bookcases, and my amministratore said afterwards it was the tidiest move the building had seen. Worth it for that alone.
My father left Sicily as a young man and we always said we would go back. Moving the children, a piano and a lifetime of my parents' furniture felt impossible. The coordinator spoke to my mother in Italian on the phone, which won her over before a single box was packed, and the ferry crossing was planned so carefully that the delivery felt routine.
I relocated for a research post and needed the customs side explained in plain English: what they would file and what I had to bring. I got a short checklist, ticked it off, and my boxes arrived labelled in Italian, so the portiere could help carry them to the right rooms.

Read the full FAQA survey and inventory at your UK home, packing and loading, the UK export declaration, the drive across the Alps, the Italian transfer-of-residence claim, and delivery planned around the access at your new address. We coordinate each stage under one written quote, and an Italian-speaking coordinator stays in touch from first enquiry to the last box placed.
Because access in Italy varies far more than in the UK. Historic centres are often camera-enforced ZTL zones that need permits, apartment buildings have condominio rules and small lifts, and rural homes sit on gravel strade bianche. The address decides the vehicle, the crew and whether an external lift or a shuttle van is needed, so we plan backwards from it.
We handle the removal paperwork: the UK export declaration, the Italian transfer-of-residence claim and the bilingual inventory behind both. Personal applications stay with you, including Anagrafe registration at your comune, your codice fiscale, any visa or permesso di soggiorno, and re-registering a car. Our guides explain each one, and we time the delivery so the two sets of paperwork do not clash.
No. If you are moving a flat, a few rooms or selected furniture and your dates can flex, a part load puts your goods on a vehicle shared with other households heading to a similar part of Italy. Your consignment keeps its own inventory and its own customs claim. If you need a fixed date, we quote a dedicated vehicle instead.
Your UK and Italian addresses, even if the Italian one is provisional, a rough idea of what is coming, and how flexible your dates are. Photographs or a map pin of the Italian street, stairwell or lane help a great deal, because access drives much of the plan. Mention pianos, artworks, wine, vehicles or pets at the start so nothing is missed.
Because no two Italian deliveries share the same volume, route, access and paperwork, so a list would mislead more than it helps. Instead you receive a written, itemised quote after a survey, with each element, from packing to permits, shown as its own line. Our cost guide explains what shapes the figure if you want to understand it before you ask.
A short brief is enough to begin. We reply by email with questions about access, arrange a survey, then send a written, itemised quote for the whole journey to your Italian door.
