Best time of year to move to Italy
Seasonal considerations for UK→Italy moves
Overview — what shapes the timing
The best time depends on your circumstances — family, work, weather sensitivity, regional destination, the Italian administrative calendar.
Broadly, late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are easiest from a logistics perspective: weather settled, alpine crossings reliable, Italian administrations not on summer slowdown, school year transitions align well.
Season by season
Spring (March-May): weather warming, alpine crossings reliable from April, Italian rental market active. Late May ideal.
Summer (June-August): peak tourism — coastal Italy and lakes especially congested. Mid-July to mid-August is the half-speed Italian administrative period (Ferragosto holiday around 15 August). Move logistics still work but plan around these.
Autumn (September-November): excellent move season. School year aligns, Italian administrations back to full speed, weather stable. October ideal.
Winter (December-February): possible but logistically harder. Brenner Pass weather-affected; alpine resort destinations severely restricted; Christmas/New Year slowdown. Mont-Blanc is more reliable than Brenner in winter.
School-year alignment
For families with school-age children, late August or early September aligns with the start of the Italian school year. Optimal for school transitions — children join the new class at the same time as everyone else.
Downside: tourist congestion and Italian administrative slowdown. We can move during this window but it requires more planning.
The August / Ferragosto consideration
August is the Italian national holiday month. Ferragosto on 15 August is a major holiday with offices commonly closing for the week either side. Many small businesses, doctors, lawyers, even some Questure operate on rotating closure or reduced hours.
If your timing is flexible, avoid arriving in August. Plan to arrive late-July at latest, or wait until early September. Italian administrative responsiveness is substantially better in September than August.
