The Sicily corridor

Moving to Sicily
— what we know about it

Sicily is the corridor where Italian-heritage moves from the UK's post-war emigrant communities matter most. Glasgow, Manchester, and Liverpool particularly have substantial Sicilian-descent communities, and we run regular moves to ancestral villages across the island. The customs paperwork is cleared on the Italian mainland (at the dogane port of entry — typically Genoa or Naples); from there the goods take the ferry to Sicily.

The two main UK→Sicily ferry routes are Genoa → Palermo (overnight, ~22 hours) and Naples → Palermo / Catania (overnight, ~10-12 hours). For destinations in eastern Sicily (Catania, Syracuse, Taormina) the Naples route is faster; for western Sicily (Palermo, Trapani) and inland (Caltanissetta, Enna) Genoa is comparable. We pick the route that suits your move at quote stage.

Palermo is the regional capital — large historic city with substantially listed Norman-Arab-Byzantine architecture, dense ZTL-controlled centre, and standard outer-suburb apartment stock. Catania is on the eastern coast with a distinct Baroque-rebuild centre after the 17th-century earthquakes. Both have active UK communities — Palermo more historical and academic, Catania more recent and tech-and-tourism.

The Sicilian rural and coastal destinations are where the logistics get distinctive. Taormina (eastern coastal cliff town with severe access constraints) requires small-vehicle transfer. Modica and Ragusa (Baroque hill towns of the Val di Noto) have narrow medieval centres with shuttle-loading. Inland Sicily — Enna, Caltanissetta, the Madonie mountains — has rural-village logistics similar to Tuscan hill villages but with longer ferry-side timing complexity. Cefalù on the north coast is a popular UK destination with established expat presence.
